Express Entry is an online system that manages three federal immigration programs, allowing for faster processing of applications for eligible candidates who are invited to apply.

The three main Express Entry programs include:

1. Canadian Experience Class

   1. for skilled workers with eligible Canadian work experience

   2. work experience must have been gained in the 3 years before you apply

   
   

2. Federal Skilled Worker Program

   1. for skilled workers with foreign or Canadian work experience

   2. must meet criteria for education and other factors

   
   

3. Federal Skilled Trades Program

   1. for skilled workers who are qualified in a skilled trade

   2. must have a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification

Provincial Nominee Program

If you’re eligible for one of the above three programs, you can also apply through Express Entry for the Provincial Nominee Program. If you’re nominated, you’ll get extra points so you may be invited to apply more quickly.

Express Entry rounds of invitations: Category-based selection

In category-based rounds of invitations, the government invites candidates in the Express Entry pool who are eligible for a specific category established by the Minister to meet an identified economic goal. Canada invites candidates to apply for permanent residence based on criteria such as:

• ability to communicate in a specific official language

• work experience in a specific occupation

• education

Category-based rounds add to general and program-specific rounds by inviting top-ranking candidates who can help Canada meet specific economic goals.

Candidates with a provincial or territorial nomination

The government will continue to invite candidates with a provincial or territorial nomination through general and Provincial Nominee Program-specific rounds. These candidates have demonstrated they have the skills, education and work experience to contribute to a specific nominating province or territory’s economy.
